The newly launched De Chastelain Scholarship Programme, supported by the Governments of Ireland and Canada, offers awards of up to CAD $16,500 to support short research visits (3–6 weeks) between Canada and Ireland.

The programme is open to researchers and academics across all disciplines. While it is framed around peace and reconciliation, this is understood in its broadest sense — including the wider systems that underpin stable, thriving societies (e.g. governance, health, environment, culture, technology, and more).

Eighteen scholarships will be awarded each year, and through a single application process, awards are made to both Emerging Scholars (within seven years of PhD) and Established Scholars, with a significant proportion reserved for emerging researchers.

Eligibility

  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • hold a PhD, or demonstrate an established academic or research practice of equivalent standing
  • employed, enrolled, or otherwise formally affiliated with a recognised university

Funding

Each awardee will receive:

  • CAD $3,000 / € 1,875 as a contribution towards all transport costs associated with the visit — including international flights, airport transfers, local transport.
  • CAD $2,250 / €1,400 per week of scholarship (for up to 6 weeks), as a contribution to address accommodation, meals, meetings, and other incidental expenses during the visit.

Deadlines

  • Application and all supporting documents must be submitted online by the deadline:Monday, 11th May 2026 at 2300 hrs GMT / 1800 hrs EST.
  • If successful and awarded a scholarship, travel must be completed by 30th June 2027.

How to Apply

Applications for the De Chastelain Scholarship Programme must be made online via Award Force, an online application platform. If you have not used Award Force in the past, you will need to register an account, before beginning your application.

Applicants must demonstrate how their proposed research or engagement activities will contribute to the goals of the De Chastelain Scholarship Programme, and will be required to outline how their proposal relates to one or both of the themes, .

Opportunities Available

For one student (faculty or administrative):

  • At Master’s or PhD level
  • For a 5-month research stay
  • To take place between September 2026 and July 2027
  • A letter of invitation from a host is not required for the application
  • Applicants should specify their field of interest from programmes available

Funding

Selected candidates will receive a paid daily allowance and travel costs up to a certain amount. The subsistence allowance is 850 Euros per month and Travel is covered up to 1188 Euros.

The project has an opening for one faculty member (teaching staff) and one non-teaching staff between UMinho and Canada. Applications from faculty members must include at least 8 hours of teaching (as part of a course or guest lecture/seminar on recent research) and staff members apply for training (job shadowing, training courses, exchange of best practices, etc.). Funding from the Erasmus+ program covers travel expenses and a 5-day stay in Portugal. Applications must be submitted online by January 7, 2022.

This programme for young scientists promotes the international exchange of innovative green ideas.

Applicants must either be currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme or have completed their degree no more than three years before the end of the application process. Their research must have a strong focus on sustainable development and an interdisciplinary approach, and they must have an excellent command of English. Applicants are welcomed from all countries (except Germany).

The prize consists of a  two-week  in Germany, where you will be introduced to renowned research facilities, have individual meetings with experts, and learn about potential collaborations.

Following the Science Forum, you will have the opportunity to return to Germany for up to three months to conduct a  at an institute of your choice the year after the Science Forum.
