It works at the intersection of human and animal health, with the natural and built environments contributing to, and transforming this relationship.<\/p>\n<p>Many One Health initiatives are driven by socioeconomic issues that include, but are not limited to population growth; nutritional, agricultural, and trade practices; poverty; globalization; land use and resource development; urbanization and migration; social justice and conflict; and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Problem identification and solution seeking from a One Health perspective requires not only an understanding of the fundamental biological mechanisms underlying health risks and the transmission of disease, but also an astute awareness of the cultural and political contexts in which humans interact with each other and their environments; an understanding of the human psyche that motivates behaviour; knowledge of environmental patterns and changes in the ecosystems in which we are embedded; communication strategies and policy developments that alter individual and system behaviours; and a capacity for efficient, effective, and innovative technical, social, and biological interventions.<\/p>\n<p>In short, One Health entails an awareness of the intricate and complex relationships among the many elements that influence human mental and physical health.<\/p>\n<p>The CHAIM Centre is building on our interdisciplinary foundation to bring researchers together from across disciplines, academic institutions, and partner organizations to be a leader in education, research and outreach in One Health.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Current Projects\u00a0<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/chaimcentre\/one-health\/2019-one-h-e-a-l-t-h-student-challenge-2\/\">2019 One HEALtH Student Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/chaimcentre\/2018-one-h-e-a-l-t-h-student-challenge\/\">2018 One H.E.A.L.t.H Student Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/chaimcentre\/2017-h-e-a-l-t-h-challenge-resources\/\">2017 One HEALtH Student Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/chaimcentre\/2018\/graduate-mentor-position-2018-one-health-student-challenge\/\">Graduate Mentor Position: 2019 One HEALtH Student Challenge<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A One Health approach to the health challenges that face the planet today requires collaborations across multiple disciplines working locally, nationally, and globally. One Health works at the intersection of human and animal health, with the natural and built environments contributing to, and transforming this relationship.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Many One Health initiatives are driven by socioeconomic issues that include, but are not limited to population growth; nutritional, agricultural, and trade practices; poverty; globalization; land use and resource development; urbanization and migration; social justice and conflict; and climate change.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In the 2018 One HEALtH Student Challenge you will work in 杏吧原创 University and University of Ottawa undergraduate interdisciplinary teams. Together with your team, you'll develop a plan to tackle a One Health issue facing our world today.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For this year's challenge, students will develop a framework for a designing a plan to\u00a0<b><i>mitigate physical and mental health risks and facilitate community rebuilding following a natural disaster<\/i><\/b><b>,<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><b><i>with a particular focus on northern First Nations communities<\/i><\/b>. Students will consider the environmental, cultural and historical factors contributing to health and wellness, and the necessary communications, support systems, programs and infrastructure for remote and rural First Nations communities to recover from a natural disaster (e.g., forest fires, floods).<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Challenge will launch with a training workshop on September 28, 2018, and will run until November. 16, 2018. At the end of the challenge, you and your team will communicate your strategy to a panel of judges at a final exhibit.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Members of the winning team will have the opportunity to work as a research intern for one academic term.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">All participants will develop skills associated with working in multi-disciplinary teams to develop out-of-the-box, community-engaged approaches to a One Health issue.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The One HEALtH Student Challenge hosted by the CHAIM Centre and the Discovery Centre at 杏吧原创 University and the Royal's Institute of Mental Health Research.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Final Challenge was held on Friday November 16th from 11:00am - 3:00pm.
