IARC Releases Report on Health Effects of Mycotoxins

An international working group of experts, chaired by �Ӱ�ԭ��’s David Miller, reviewed the health effects of aflatoxins and fumonisins. Stemming from the panel’s analysis, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) today released a stating the evidence and conclusions reached by the panel. The panel concluded that mycotoxins (commonly found in staple foods in developing countries) are not only a cause of acute poisoning and cancer but are also a likely contributor to the high levels of stunting in children in affected populations. A need for further longitudinal research was noted, but the panel noted four possible interventions that could be implemented to reduce exposure to mycotoxins.
