The\u00a0Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence<\/a> is pleased to host: \u201cFailing European Orders: Pathological Learning in the Past and Today,\u201d a research lecture presented by Dr. J\u00fcrgen Neyer introducing:<\/p>\n

A book project that deals with the intertwined social and political crisis of the EU and promising ways of overcoming it. In its first part, the talk explains a theoretical approach which draws on a body of literature combining cybernetic and deliberative concepts ranging from Karl Deutsch to J\u00fcrgen Habermas. It focuses on the notion of pathological learning and integrates the concepts in a model of three successive phases of political crisis. The second part applies the model to a most-different-case design discussing insights from more than 2000 years of European history and infers a set of lessons about the conditions under which political orders have failed in the past. In its final part, those lessons are applied to the EU and used for identifying a set of measures that are likely to help overcoming its social and political crisis.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"Dr. J\u00fcrgen Neyer<\/a> is the current chair of European and International Politics at the European University Viadrina<\/a> and is the founding director of the European New School of Digital Studies<\/a> (ENS). He has researched and taught at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, the University of Bremen, the University of California at Berkeley, Haifa University, the European University Institute Florence, and the Free University Berlin. Dr. Neyer has widely published on European governance, deliberative democracy and digital sovereignty.<\/p>\n
