Sanctions are back with a vengeance with new objectives, measures, challenges, and opportunities. Shaping the thinking of generations of scholars, Canadian visionary Margaret Doxey anticipated and analyzed these issues, making now the time to rediscover her seminal lessons and apply them to emerging sanctions practices that are taking shape in an increasingly geopolitically contested environment.Written by an international team of women, Multilateral Sanctions Revisited explores UN measures, regional sanctions, autonomous measures, and their interrelations. Informed by Doxey鈥檚 insights, the authors trace the evolution of scholarship surrounding multilateral sanctions. The first section analyzes how different actors, such as great powers and regional organizations, employ multilateral sanctions. Turning to contemporary issues, the book鈥檚 second section addresses the application and consequences of multilateral sanctions, including the norms they enforce, the pernicious problem of evasion, and future challenges, such as sanctioning cryptocurrencies.

Multilateral Sanctions Revisited is both a source for academics and a guidebook for practitioners written by leading and emerging sanctions scholars from three continents.

EU Policy Talk: Are EU Sanctions Effective? /ces/cu-events/eu-policy-talk-are-eu-sanctions-effective/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=eu-policy-talk-are-eu-sanctions-effective Wed, 19 Oct 2022 20:34:56 +0000 /ces/?post_type=cu-events&p=13309 The Centre for European Studies Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in cooperation with the ,聽is pleased to host an EU Policy Talk, 鈥淎re EU Sanctions Effective?鈥 with University of Valencia. This is an in-person event on the 杏吧原创 campus.

杏吧原创 the event: Within the toolbox of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), the EU employs sanctions to respond to a broad array of foreign policy challenges, including most recently the Russian invasion of Ukraine. EU sanctions are also aimed at addressing other concerns, such as democratic backsliding, human rights violations, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, the misappropriation of state assets, and human trafficking. But how do we know whether and when sanctions are effective? Despite the growing reliance on sanctions, mainstream analyses typically portray the sanctions regime as unsuccessful. However, most assessments are based on the observation that the target of sanctions fails to alter its policy course. This talk proposes an alternative assessment framework that first identifies the purposes pursued by sanctions and relies on a broader set of criteria to produce a more accurate picture of their effectiveness.

Goodbye Britannia? Brexit and Britain鈥檚 Approach to International Relations /ces/cu-events/goodbye-britannia-brexit-britains-approach-international-relations/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=goodbye-britannia-brexit-britains-approach-international-relations Mon, 14 Nov 2016 19:38:04 +0000 /ces/?post_type=cu-events&p=9650 IMPORTANT: This event is hosted by the聽Centre for International Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa. Please refer to the event 聽for any updates.

Britain鈥檚 vote to leave the European Union came as a shock to many in Europe and internationally and raised concerns that Britain is heading towards isolating itself not only from the rest of Europe but taking a more populist, inward-looking, and mercantilist view towards international relations. Supporters of Brexit counter by arguing that in joining the EU, the UK 鈥榮hackled itself to a corpse鈥 and that leaving will allow Britain and the EU to develop a more constructive relationship while also allowing the UK to return to a foreign policy that is more global orientated as opposed to European focused. As Brexit unfolds the realities for Britain鈥檚 approaches to European security, conflict, and development are slowly becoming apparent. In this presentation, Dr Tim Oliver, a noted writer on Brexit and British foreign policy, will discuss why Brexit happened, where relations between the UK and the EU might now be headed, what Brexit could mean for European security, and whether concerns about Brexit and Britain鈥檚 isolation and decline are justified.

His research interests focus on transatlantic relations, European politics, British-European relations, British government and politics, and the UK鈥檚 foreign, security, and defence policies.
