TheJean Monnet Centre of Excellenceis pleased to host an in-person book launch for edited by Dr. Andrea Charron of the University of Manitoba and Dr. Clara Portela of the University of Valencia. There will be light refreshments available at the event.

Ӱԭ the event:

Sanctions are back with a vengeance with new objectives, measures, challenges, and opportunities. Shaping the thinking of generations of scholars, Canadian visionary Margaret Doxey anticipated and analyzed these issues, making now the time to rediscover her seminal lessons and apply them to emerging sanctions practices that are taking shape in an increasingly geopolitically contested environment.Written by an international team of women, Multilateral Sanctions Revisited explores UN measures, regional sanctions, autonomous measures, and their interrelations. Informed by Doxey’s insights, the authors trace the evolution of scholarship surrounding multilateral sanctions. The first section analyzes how different actors, such as great powers and regional organizations, employ multilateral sanctions. Turning to contemporary issues, the book’s second section addresses the application and consequences of multilateral sanctions, including the norms they enforce, the pernicious problem of evasion, and future challenges, such as sanctioning cryptocurrencies.

Multilateral Sanctions Revisited is both a source for academics and a guidebook for practitioners written by leading and emerging sanctions scholars from three continents.

Goodbye Britannia? Brexit and Britain’s Approach to International Relations /ces/cu-events/goodbye-britannia-brexit-britains-approach-international-relations/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=goodbye-britannia-brexit-britains-approach-international-relations Mon, 14 Nov 2016 19:38:04 +0000 /ces/?post_type=cu-events&p=9650 IMPORTANT: This event is hosted by theCentre for International Policy Studies at the University of Ottawa. Please refer to the event for any updates.

Britain’s vote to leave the European Union came as a shock to many in Europe and internationally and raised concerns that Britain is heading towards isolating itself not only from the rest of Europe but taking a more populist, inward-looking, and mercantilist view towards international relations. Supporters of Brexit counter by arguing that in joining the EU, the UK ‘shackled itself to a corpse’ and that leaving will allow Britain and the EU to develop a more constructive relationship while also allowing the UK to return to a foreign policy that is more global orientated as opposed to European focused. As Brexit unfolds the realities for Britain’s approaches to European security, conflict, and development are slowly becoming apparent. In this presentation, Dr Tim Oliver, a noted writer on Brexit and British foreign policy, will discuss why Brexit happened, where relations between the UK and the EU might now be headed, what Brexit could mean for European security, and whether concerns about Brexit and Britain’s isolation and decline are justified.

Yet when leaving the EU, EU citizens are treated as citizens of their member state. The EU has recently developed initiatives to politically involve Europeans outside Europe. This may constitute a step towards an EU emigration and diaspora policy. This talk discusses whether it is realistic to expect the EU to develop such a policy. Three issues will be considered: EU identification among the EU migrants; diversity of ethnic origins among the European emigrants and diaspora members; and the developing culture of mobility.weinar-research-seminar-oct-31-2016-poster-draft-rev-cs_ah
