The event will take place on Friday, March 4, 2022. The Conference will explore and explain important topics and issues relating to the European Union. The aim is to educate high school students in EU-related matters to expand their interest and knowledge of European affairs and global topics as it relates to Canada.

The target audience is high school students studying business, world issues, geography, history, economics in Ottawa and the surrounding area. The project will include lesson plans and online instruction materials developed to fit the Ontario curriculum in various courses and events for students held on Zoom.

A registration link will be provided for high school teachers who would like to attend the event with their students.

Upcoming Teachers Workshop! /ces/eulearning/2022/teachers-workshop-2022-jean-monnet-project/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=teachers-workshop-2022-jean-monnet-project Sat, 22 Jan 2022 19:24:41 +0000 /ces/eulearning/?p=3312 We would like to formally invite high school teachers from across the three local school boards: Upper Canada District School Board, Ottawa-杏吧原创 District School Board, and Ottawa Catholic School Board to attend the annual one-day Teachers’ Workshop on February 18, 2022, from 9-11:55 am, via Zoom.

Designed to assist with their classroom programming, our goal is to augment teachers’ knowledge of the significant political, economic, and cultural challenges facing the EU and European countries and Canada-Europe relations.

The workshop presentations will include an overview of the history of the EU and enriched modules on a range of topics which may include:

  • Causes and consequences of Brexit
  • EU trade relations
  • The recently signed Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Europe and Canada
  • EU responses to the refugee crisis
  • EU and the right-wing populist movement
  • EU and the law

Once you have registered, you will be provided with an email as well as a draft agenda. Please feel free to share this invitation with any fellow teacher and supply teachers who would be interested in attending.

MA & PhD Students – Showcase Your Work! EU Issues Conference 2021 /ces/eulearning/2021/ma-phd-students-showcase-your-work-eu-issues-conference-2021/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=ma-phd-students-showcase-your-work-eu-issues-conference-2021 Mon, 22 Nov 2021 14:06:25 +0000 /ces/eulearning/?p=3288 The Jean Monnet Project 鈥淓U Learning in Canadian High Schools鈥 will be hosting a one-day conference on Friday, December 10, 2021, for high school students. The conference is focused on exploring and explaining important topics and issues relating to the European Union. The workshop will include a keynote speaker followed by three one-hour presentations by each graduate student participating in the conference.

The selection of topics will be a competitive process and the deadline to submit proposed topics is November 26, 2021.

Submissions are encouraged from MA and Ph.D. students in EURUS, History, Political Science, International Affairs, Economics, Law and Legal Studies and other relevant subject fields.

Proposals will be one page (approximately) and will include a title, learning objectives and outcomes and a general overview of the topic, along with an indication of any interactive exercises with students during the presentation.

Mini-EU Day celebrated with Ottawa area high school students and teachers /ces/eulearning/2021/mini-eu-day-ottawa-high-school-students-and-teachers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mini-eu-day-ottawa-high-school-students-and-teachers Tue, 25 May 2021 19:37:27 +0000 /ces/eulearning/?p=3242 The Jean Monnet Project Mini-EU Day brought together 85 students and teachers on Friday, May 14th for the first time. The event began with Professor Crina Viju-Miljusevic, EURUS, providing an introduction to the European Union (EU) and the meaning of celebrating Europe Day which was held on May 9th. Many of the students were enrolled in international business classes at their high school.

A brief presentation with videos highlighting European Culture () and Galway, Ireland as a 2020 Capital of Culture () was followed by a panel presentation with representatives from three embassies in Ottawa: Delegation of the European Union to Canada, Embassy of Ireland and Embassy of Portugal. Each offered their insights important to the culture of their respective country and the diversity of European cultures. Portugal currently holds the of the Council of the European Union.

During the Mini-EU Day, students and teachers learned about the value of culture bringing Europeans together, strengthening communities across Europe and deepened their understanding of the impact of culture in Europe. With two fun activities designed for the event, students played trivia games of well known European people, sports, food, geography, fashion, art and architecture and symbols.

Learn about the best practices among European media and basic journalistic techniques as part of the European lessons to identify when disinformation is being promoted and exercises to improve critical thinking skills to identify fake news.

Students provided with case studies and scenarios discussed how to determine听who qualifies as an EU refugee and applied newly learned criteria to scenarios in order to understand the difference between migrant and refugee.
