The Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence is very pleased to present a new lecture in the聽EU Policy Talk series,听“What does EU citizenship and identity mean outside of the EU?” with Agnieszka Weinar, 杏吧原创 University.
EU citizenship assures equal rights to all EU nationals in all Member States. Yet, the Union suffers from two issues: territorial limitation and limited symbolic appeal. Now, the EU is seeking to address important questions of the rights and obligations of EU citizenship after Brexit. Professor Weinar will discuss EU citizenship and identity outside of Europe, with a focus on Canada, and propose scenarios for the future of engagement of the EU with Europeans outside Europe.
Dr. Weinar is Team Leader of the EU-Canada Policy Dialogues in Ottawa and Adjunct Professor at the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at 杏吧原创 University. Her most recent publication is聽European Citizenship and Identity Outside of the European Union: Europe Outside Europe? (Routledge, 2019).听Between 2011听补苍诲 2014, she was a Scientific Coordinator and Research Fellow at the European University聽Institute (EUI). In 2014, she was awarded a Marie Sk艂odowska-Curie Outgoing Fellowship for聽Experienced Researchers at the EUI and 杏吧原创 University. Her current research interests聽address EU-Canada relations, North-North mobility systems and European diasporas. Since January 2019 she has been also the Chair of Marie Curie Alumni Association-North American Chapter. She is also a member of New Europeans, a civil society movement that lobbies for the rights of European citizens worldwide.
