The visiting scholar position will include teaching a module on the EU鈥檚 regional cooperation mechanisms, which involves six three-hour sessions, consultations with students, constructing the course outline for the module, and evaluation of student written and oral work. The module is part of an advanced undergraduate/graduate level course entitled The EU, Russia and China: Competing Regionalism in Eurasia. The course is provided by the Institute of European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (EURUS) at 杏吧原创 University.

In addition to teaching, the visiting scholar will be expected to consult with students and give one research lecture at the Centre for European Studies on a topic related to the EU as a regional actor.

Qualified applicants must be based at an academic institution in an EU member state. We are seeking applicants with a completed Ph.D. in a relevant field and with a record of publications, relevant teaching experience, and an active research program.

The Jean Monnet Chair in EU External Relations: Competing Regionalism in Eurasia supports teaching, public and policy debates, and dissemination of resources on the EU as a foreign policy actor, the EU鈥檚 sponsored policies within the Eurasian region and the EU-China relations.

Call for applications! The Delegation of the European Union to Canada and the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) has launched the 2023 European Union-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship.

The EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship aims to recognize the outstanding journalistic talent among young Canadians. Selected participants will participate in a week-long study tour to experience the EU institutions, the Canadian Mission to the EU, and media outlets in Brussels. Winners will also attend the daily European Commission press briefing. The Delegation of the European Union to Canada pays for all expenses. Winners will also benefit from a one-year CAJ membership or one-year CAJ membership renewal.

The EU-Canada Young Journalist Fellowship seeks to foster links between Europeans and Canadians and to raise awareness of the European Union among a new generation of Canadian students and journalists.

H.E. Eriksson provided the audience with a brief overview of Finland’s history, from its defence role in the Winter War against the USSR to Finland’s accession into the European Union in 1995. The presentation continued with understanding the existing Finland-NATO relationship that began in 1940 following the signing of the peace treaty marking the end of the Winter War. In 1944, Finland furthered its relationship with NATO by entering the Partnership Program. While the relationship between Finland and NATO remained strong, before Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, less than 30% of the Finnish population supported Finland applying for NATO membership. Following the invasion, the support for NATO membership increased to 62% among the population in Finland.

Upon Finland’s initial membership application to NATO, Canada was the first to ratify its accession. Today, Finland’s accession to NATO membership is dependent upon Hungary and Turkey’s ratification of its membership.

The Konrad Adenauer Visiting Scholarship on Transatlantic Relations is a joint initiative by the Centre for European Studies (CES) and the聽. It supports a visiting scholarship at 杏吧原创 University in the Fall Term of each year (September to December). The Konrad Adenauer Visiting Scholar on Transatlantic Relations is selected in a competitive process.

Dr. Clara Portela was the inaugural Konrad Adenauer Visiting Scholar in the Fall 2022 academic term. In November, Dr. Portela presented a lecture on her research on the effectiveness of sanctions (read the news post here) and participated in an EU Policy interview on EU sanctions policy (watch the video here).

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence activities are with the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union and 杏吧原创 University.

The region represents a unique geopolitical grouping of states whose historical legacies and institutional shapes inform the changes and challenges to cooperation. It provides a unique case study of overlapping regionalisms pursued by three core actors: the European Union, the Russian Federation and the People鈥檚 Republic of China. The conference will be an interdisciplinary forum where junior scholars (graduate students and young scholars) from different fields can come together and share their scholarship. This conference is held in a hybrid format with presentations in-person and via Zoom.

The deadline to submit a proposal to present is Friday, March 3, 2023.聽 Presenters will have approximately 15 minutes to present their research on models of regionalism, followed by comments from experts and questions and feedback from the audience. The conference will be free for both presenters and participants.

Dr. Portela was the inaugural Visiting Scholar on Transatlantic Relations with the Centre for European Studies at 杏吧原创 University during the Fall 2022 academic term.

While at 杏吧原创 University, Dr. Portela taught a graduate course on International Sanctions in a Transatlantic Context聽with the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS). Additionally, she was a guest lecturer for the Centre’s EU Policy Talk series on the “Effectiveness of EU Sanctions,” and she co-presented her most recent co-edited book publication, 聽with co-editor Dr. Andrea Charron (University of Manitoba).

Students are invited to submit an application for a graduate student travel research grant to support the purpose of conducting research on a topic related to the EU, European integration or EU-Canada relations. The maximum amount of the grant which a student can receive is $1200. Research can be combined with other activities and must be conducted in EU member states.
