In a house full of secrets, centuries of forgotten matriarchs emerge to reveal untold stories of resistance and resilience.

At the end of her mother鈥檚 life, decolonial writer Julietta Singh returns to say goodbye to her haunted childhood home. As she digs into the history of the house, she uncovers 140 years of forgotten matriarchs and political rebels she never knew. Singh teams up with acclaimed filmmaker Chase Joynt (Framing Agnes, No Ordinary Man) for a politically charged cross-community collaboration that deftly interweaves Indigenous, Deaf, Japanese and South Asian histories, all connected through the home. A reckoning with memory, matriarchy and the enduring legacies of silenced voices, the film questions who gets lost in the archives of history, and what we stand to gain by resurrecting them. The Nest transforms a single home from a place of siloed histories into a site of radical collective potential. ()

The Manitoba M茅tis Federation (MMF) is the democratically elected National Government of the Red River M茅tis, also known as the Manitoba M茅tis. The Red River M茅tis are a distinct Indigenous Nation and people, with their own laws and democratic system of government, with which they became Canada鈥檚 negotiating partners in confederation and the founders of the Province of Manitoba.

The Manitoba School for the Deaf (MSD) is a pre-K鈥�12 school offering both bilingual-bicultural and bilingual-bimodal programming. It is a cornerstone of recognition, acceptance and promotion of Deaf culture in Manitoba, with an emphasis on education鈥檚 vital role in supporting Deaf children.

The Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba (JCAM) is a non-profit, charitable organization that serves as the representative organization for Japanese Canadians in Manitoba. Their mission is to educate the community about Japanese and Japanese-Canadian art, music, culture, language, heritage and history.

Description: Henrique Schlumberger Vitchmichen is a PhD candidate at the Federal University of Paran谩 (Brazil) under the supervision of Professor , and a Visiting Scholar (April-Oct 2025) in the Department of History at 杏吧原创 University. On Friday September 25th, he will present his work on the activities of the Ukrainian Aid Committee in Brazil and Canada, focusing on their efforts to support Displaced Persons after World War II. Drawing on official documents from governments, committees, and humanitarian organizations such as the International Refugee Organization (IRO), his work also examines the personal struggles and challenges faced by refugees through their letters of appeal. The event is co-hosted by the (CNHH) and 杏吧原创 University Department of History.

Happy Birthday Frederick Douglass! Although Douglass never knew his birthdate, he chose to celebrate every year on February 14th. Douglass Day is a day of collective action for Black history.

This year the Library of Congress (LOC) in the United States will host a virtual transcribe-a-thon of rare books and manuscripts related to African American history for . Volunteers from the United States, Canada, and other participating countries, will transcribe selected materials from the Rare Book and Special Collections Division and Manuscript Division, including the Daniel A. P. Murray Collection, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Records, Booker T. Washington Papers, and more.

Join collective digital public history action this Feb 14th by participating in the LOC’s virtual transcribe-a-thon.

What is a ‘transcribe-a-thon’ and what does it have to do with ‘Public History’?

• A transcribe-a-thon is an event in which people gather in person or online to work simultaneously on a crowdsourcing project.
• Crowdsourced historical transcription projects allow for the participation of a greater range of people involved in historical understandings and archival work.
• This broadly participatory type of historical work falls under the umbrella of ‘public history’ – history occurring outside traditional academic spaces and history that expands our understanding of who is a public historian.
• By engaging K-12 students, University students, larger publics and civic volunteers, transcribe-a-thons help to bolster our digital collections and involve more people, backgrounds, and audiences in the process of archival work and historical understandings.
