Mia Phillips is a 2025 ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ graduate with a Bachelor of International Business, Concentration in Global Financial Management & Systems. Today, she is embarking on her career as an aspiring Independent Financial Advisor with Desjardins Financial Security Independent Network<\/a>, a role she eventually landed after attending a Career & Networking Fair on campus. In this Q&A, Mia shares how she turned her initial conversation with Desjardins into a career opportunity, what helped her stand out to employers, and her best advice for students looking to make the most of networking events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you end up working for Desjardins?<\/strong>
When I attended the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ Career & Networking Fair, I wasn\u2019t necessarily looking for one specific company. At this point in my degree, I knew I wanted something in finance, just didn\u2019t know what area yet. I wanted to explore opportunities that aligned with both finance and relationship-building. I came across Desjardins and immediately connected with their values and community focus. I loved how much of an impact they have on people across Canada. I could share my love for finance and relationship-building in one place. After the fair, I was proactive\u2014I followed up on LinkedIn, asked to learn more about their office and training program, and stayed in touch with the management team. That persistence led to an opportunity to join their team and begin the journey to becoming a Financial Advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What preparation did you do before meeting employers at the Career & Networking Fair you attended as a student?<\/strong>
I researched the companies in advance so I could ask informed questions that went beyond the job description. I also practiced introducing myself confidently, highlighting my background in international business and my interest in finance to make a memorable first impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Were you interested in visiting Desjardins before you attended the fair or did you just come across them at the event?<\/strong>
I came across Desjardins at the fair and was drawn in by how approachable their representatives were. It felt less like a sales pitch and more like a conversation about purpose and growth, which stood out to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did you talk about in your first conversation with the Desjardins\u2019 employer rep? Is there anything you said or did during that conversation that you think helped you stand out as a candidate?<\/strong>
We talked about the balance between financial education and client relationships\u2014how financial advisors can make a lasting difference by simplifying complex concepts. I think my enthusiasm for helping people understand finance genuinely came through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How does it feel being on the employer side now given your experiences as a student?<\/strong>
It\u2019s amazing. Being on the employer side now gives me a full-circle moment. I remember exactly how it felt to walk into that fair with uncertainty, and now I get to represent the same organization that helped launch my career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there any advice you have for students about Career Fairs or networking events, now that you have been on both \u201csides\u201d of the recruiting booth?<\/strong>
Approach every conversation as a chance to learn, not just to impress. Employers remember authenticity more than a perfect elevator pitch. Ask questions, be curious, and show real interest in the work they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anything else we should know?<\/strong>
