Policy Paper: 鈥淟essons Learned from Transatlantic Electoral Assistance in the Palestinian Territories鈥 by Rouba Al-Fattal Eeckelaert /canadaeurope/2014/policy-paper-lessons-learned-transatlantic-electoral-assistance-palestinian-territories/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=policy-paper-lessons-learned-transatlantic-electoral-assistance-palestinian-territories Thu, 20 Feb 2014 20:12:48 +0000 /canadaeurope/?p=2296 Policy Paper (February 2014) By Rouba Al-Fattal Eeckelaert, visiting scholar听at the Centre for European Studies

At a time when an unprecedented wave of democratization is rippling through the Arab world, it is very important to reevaluate the actors鈥 commitment to democracy promotion and to examine the challenges which they must overcome if they seriously want their efforts to succeed. Three of the significant questions highlighted听in this policy paper are: Why is it important to rethink electoral assistance when dealing with democracy promotion policy? What instruments and approaches did the EU, the US, and Canada employ while implementing their electoral assistance policy in the PT? How effective were the actors鈥 policies in the democratization process of the PT and why? Addressing the actors鈥 policy successes and shortfalls is necessary before providing valid proposals to the policy-makers who are pioneering the democracy promotion programs in the MENA region.

Commentary: Nobel Peace Prize for the European Union /canadaeurope/2012/commentary-nobel-peace-prize-for-the-european-union/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=commentary-nobel-peace-prize-for-the-european-union Mon, 10 Dec 2012 15:00:31 +0000 /canadaeurope/?p=591 By Achim Hurrelmann, CETD collaborator and听Associate Professor of Political Science, 杏吧原创 University

In October 2012, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that this year鈥檚 Nobel Peace Prize would be awarded to the European Union. This decision was seen as surprising by many observers, especially in the light of the Eurozone financial crisis, which has resulted in an overwhelmingly negative discourse about the EU in recent years. This commentary reviews the current criticisms on the Nobel鈥檚 decision by comparing the achievements of the EU and NATO in post-war Europe.
