Once an assessment in D2L Brightspace has been completed and graded, instructors are able to access aggregate and individual statistics related to the grades. In your course’s Grade Book, you can find two types of reports related to grades: Grade Statistics and Event Logs.

Grade Statistics

The Grade Statistics in Brightspace contain Class Statistics as well as Individuals User (student) grade statistics.

Grade Statistics

Accessing the grade statistics page allows access to Class Statistics tab and User Statistics tab within your course.

To access the grade statistics page:

  1. Log into your course with your My杏吧原创One credentials.
  2. Click on Progress in the NavBar.
  3. Select Grades from the drop-down menu.
NOTE: If you haven’t yet set up your gradebook, you will be prompted to do so.
  4. Click on either the Manage Grades tab or Enter Grades
  5. Click on the action menu next to the grade item of interest.
  6. Select View Statistics from the drop-down menu.
You now have two options for statistics to access: Class Statistics and User Statistics.
  7. Select the Class Statistics or User Statistics Tab.
  8. Click the View Statistics For drop-down menu. You can change the View By field to User, Group, or Section if you have groups and/or sections in your course. This can be helpful to try and compare grades by different TA Groups or different teaching sections.
NOTE: When viewing statistics for Brightspace’s Final Calculated Grade item, you have the additional ability to toggle between this grade item and the Final Adjusted Grade item.

Class Statistics

The following are explanations for each of the statistics presented in the Class Statistics tab.

  • Number of submitted grades: The numerator in this expression is a count of the values contributing to the class-level statistics. For example, in a course wherein 21 grades have been computed, this value will be 21. The denominator denotes the number of possible values (i.e., the number of grade-earning users — often learners — in the course).
NOTE: The numerator in this expression does not include 0’s that have not been entered manually. This means that if you use the setting Treat all ungraded items as 0, these automatically generated 0s are not contributing to the statistics.

  • Minimum: The lowest grade achieved on this grade item, expressed as a percentage. This value does not include ungraded items that are treated as zero.
  • Maximum: The highest grade achieved on this grade item, expressed as a percentage. This value does not include ungraded items that are treated as zero.
  • Average: The sum of all the grades for this grade item divided by the number of submitted grades, expressed as a percentage. This value does not include ungraded items that are treated as zero.
  • Mode: The most frequently earned grade on this grade item, expressed as a percentage. This value does not include ungraded items that are treated as zero.
  • Median: The middle of the distribution (i.e., the value that sits in the position of minimum plus half of the range), expressed as a percentage. This value does not include ungraded items that are treated as zero.
TIP: The Average, Mode, and Median are all measures of central tendency. The closer these numbers are to each other, the more normally distributed your grades are for this grade item. If one of these measures is very different, it might be worth investigating why that is (e.g., is there a student who earned a significantly lower grade compared to their peers? If so, why is that?)

  • Standard Deviation: To complement the measures of central tendency, standard deviation is a measure of dispersion in the data. This statistic measures how spread the data is; that is, on average, how far away is the data from the average. This standard deviation uses the population computation, as it is assumed that this parameter is meant to describe users who participated in the evaluation; this means that it is not meant to be used as a statistic to infer to a greater population of interest.
NOTE: If you have a large standard deviation, this might be indicative of inconsistent performance among your students. This is a flag to indicate that grades should be investigated (e.g., why is there such a large discrepancy in grades?)

  • Grade Distribution: This Figure is a histogram that depicts the percentage of students (y-axis) who have received a certain range of grades, expressed as a percentage (x-axis). Grade received (%) is binned into 5% ranges and the height of the bars indicates what percentage of students eared a grade within that 5% range.

In the example Grade Distribution shown above, 45% of students earned between 90-95% on this evaluation.

User Statistics

The User Statistics Tab allows you to compare students’ performance on one evaluation with other evaluations. The table presents a list of students and their grade, expressed as a percentage, on the grade item chosen. Click on Show Search Options to explore these data in more detail.

To Filter User Statistics:

  1. Access the Grade Statistics Page.
  2. Select the User Statistics Tab.
  3. Under Score, click on the select box to activate it.
  4. Choose a different grade item
  5. Choose with operator you’d like to use
    • =: score on chosen grade item is greater than or equal to the typed value, as a percentage.
    • < =: score on chosen grade item is less than or equal to the typed value, as a percentage.
    • >: score on chosen grade item is greater than the typed value, as a percentage.
    • <: score on chosen grade item is less than the typed value, as a percentage.
    • =: score on chosen grade item is equal to the typed value, as a percentage.
  6. Type the value you’d like to compare against (as a percentage); this must be a numeric value.

The image above is an example of filtering the User Statistics for Quiz 8 by students who received less than or equal to 50% on Quiz 7.

Event Logs

The D2L Brightspace Grade Book has two kinds of event logs: Overall Event Log and Grade Item Event Log. The Overall Event Log will provide you with information related to the creation, deletion, and restoration of grade items. The Grade Item Event Log will provide you with information related to any changes made for each grade item separately.

To Access the Overall Event Log:

  1. Log into your course with your My杏吧原创One credentials.
  2. Click on Progress in the NavBar.
  3. Select Grades from the drop-down menu.
NOTE: If you haven’t yet set up your gradebook, you will be prompted to do so.
  4. Click on the More Actions button.
  5. Select View Event Log from the pulldown menu.

From here, you’ll see a Table of all the changes that have been made to the grade book in your Brightspace course. If you click on Show Search Options, you’ll see that you can filter the Table by Action (I.e., Created, Deleted, or Restored) and Date (start dates and end dates related to the grade item; i.e., not the associated evaluation). Additionally, you can search within the grade item name and grade id.

In the Item column, you can click on the grade item name to be brought to the Edit Settings page for that grade item.

To Access Grade Item Event Logs:

  1. Log into your course with your My杏吧原创One credentials.
  2. Click on Progress in the NavBar.
  3. Select Grades from the drop-down menu.
NOTE: If you haven’t yet set up your gradebook, you will be prompted to do so.
  4. Click on either the Manage Grades tab or Enter Grades.
  5. Click on the action menu next to the grade item of interest.
  6. Select View Event Log from the pulldown menu.

From here, you’ll see a Table of all the modifications that have been made to this specific grade item. The Table indicates the modification (e.g., grade item description), when it was changed and by whom. Additionally, you can click Show description to see the previous value.

Click on Show Search Options to filter this by start and end dates associated with the grade item.

Grade schemes allow you to customize how levels of achievement are displayed to students in the gradebook. You can use the default scheme (Percentage), or select a custom scheme.

What is a Grade Scheme?

*The information below is from the D2L documentation

A grade scheme enables you to organize students’ performances on grade items into levels of achievement. A grade scheme can include any number of achievement levels. Each achievement level has its own range of acceptable grades and a symbol, such as a numeric value, letter, or text description, to represent it. You can set up grade schemes in the Setup Wizard or on the Schemes page of your gradebook.

Example

Letter

F, D, C, B, A, A+

Numeric

2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0

Text

杏吧原创

E-grades is 杏吧原创’s final grade entry and approval system accessed through 杏吧原创 Central. Within E-grades, instructors can enter grades manually for each student or import/copy and paste grades into E-grades.

While D2L Brightspace can be used for grading and assessment, there is no direct connection between Brightspace and the E-Grades system. However, grades can be exported from Brightspace as a letter grade and then copied into E-grades for final grade submission.

NOTE: The Registrar’s Office provides support for E-grades and have provided some instructions and screenshots below. For full instructions and help with E-grades, please visit the help file in the E-grades page or contact Systems and Training Support: Faculty_Systems_Support@carleton.ca.
If you need assistance with exporting your grades from Brightspace, please submit a support request using the .

There are four processes involved in submitting your final grades to E-grades:

Each of these four processes is explained below.

Assigning a Letter Grade Scheme to your Final Grade Column

There are two types of final grades in Brightspace: Final Calculated Grade and Final Adjusted Grade. If you want to leave your grades without any changes, you can export the Final Calculated Grades. If you need to modify any final grades, you should export the Final Adjusted Grades. Whether you are using Final Calculated Grades or Final Adjusted Grades, you will need to select a letter grade scheme before you export your grades.

→ For instructions on how to release final grades to students, refer to our support page: Releasing Final Grades to Students.

NOTE: Brightspace does not round grades. That means that if a student has 79.99 their final grade will be a B+. If you would like to round it up to 80, and therefore an A-, you need to do that using Final Adjusted Grades.

  • Text Submissions – This submission type requires students to submit a response in a text box in Brightspace (e.g. blog post).
  • On Paper Submission – This submission type does not allow students to submit through Brightspace. Students must submit a paper copy of the assignment (e.g. essay).
  • Observed in Person – This submission type does not allow students to submit through Brightspace. Students must complete an in-person assessment (e.g. presentation).

  9. A pop-up window will appear on the screen while Brightspace prepares a zip file containing all the students/submissions that have been selected. When the package is ready, select the Download button in the pop-up window to save the zip file to your computer.

NOTE: The original ZIP file contains a subfolder for each user submission with a numeric ID prefixed to the folder name, which can make it difficult to import back into Brightspace. If you’d like to remove the numeric IDs, use the Bulk Assignment Renamer in the Converter dropdown menu (found in the navbar).

  10. Extract the zip file. This will create a submission folder for every student who has made a submission.

WARNING: Do not change the title of the submission folder. Doing so can affect importing feedback files to Brightspace.

  • Open a student submission folder.
  • Evaluate the assignment and add feedback.
  • Save your changes on each file.
  • Repeat steps 11 to 13 for each student submission folder.
  • Once you have evaluated and added feedback to all submission files and saved them, select all the updated folders and create a .zip folder.

NOTE: If you have any learner names with characters that cannot be used in a compressed folder, such as Ø, rename that folder and reattempt to create a .zip folder. Do not change the ID prefixed to the name of the folder.

To upload the feedback package to Brightspace:

NOTE: Before uploading feedback files, you must re-zip the parent folder that contains all of the student folders. Brightspace will not accept an un-zipped folder if you try to upload it.  If you have previously used the Assignment Converter to alphabetically rename the sub-folders, then you will need to re-run the new ZIP file back through the “Un-Convert” feature of the Assignment Converter to undo those changes.

  1. Log into using your My杏吧原创One credentials.
  2. On the Brightspace homepage, locate your course in one of the following ways:
    • Select the course tile under the My Courses widget.

  8. Select the Add button at the bottom of the pop-up window.
  9. Once you select the “Add” button, Brightspace will start extracting the contents of the zip file and distributing them across the students’ submissions. This may take some time, depending on the number of files / size of the import. When the process is complete, the pop-up window will close, and a message will appear briefly at the bottom of the screen stating that X number of files were successfully uploaded.

Bulk Upload Feedback Files Only

If you are not annotating the assignments but creating separate feedback files: follow the steps in the Grade Offline/Bulk Upload section above but remove the students’ original submissions from the folders before uploading the feedback package. Otherwise, Brightspace will also attach the students’ original submissions as feedback files.

NOTE:  Previewing student grades is the most accurate way to view how a student will see their grades in D2L Brightspace. When you are viewing the course as a learner using “Role Switch,” the grades may not be up-to-date or accurately displayed.

What is the difference between the Calculated Final Grade and the Adjusted Final Grade in D2L Brightspace?

There are two types of final grades in Brightspace: Calculated Final Grade and Adjusted Final Grade. Calculated Final Grades are automatically calculated based on the gradebook settings you have selected. If you want to leave your grades without any changes, you can release the Final Calculated Grades to students. The Adjusted Final Grade option allows instructors to modify student grades. If you make any final grade adjustments in Brightspace, you should release the Adjusted Final Grades.

By default, students will not be able to view their final grades. You can release final grades in the Enter Grades tab of your gradebook. You can easily undo the release of final grades using the “Unrelease” option.

NOTE: Brightspace does not round up grades. That means that if a student has 79.99 their final grade will be a B+. If you would like to round it up to 80, and therefore an A-, you would need to do that using Final Adjusted Grades.

How can I tell if a grade item has been released to students?

An unreleased grade item will appear with a crossed-out eye icon and a released grade item will appear with an open eye icon (refer to the example below)

Released:

Unreleased:

The D2L Brightspace gradebook, or simply Grades, is a powerful tool to help you manage grades and communicate feedback directly to students. Gradebook can be used to calculate the final grades of your students; however, final grade submission occurs through the E-grades system.  E-grades is managed by Faculty Systems Support at the Registrar’s Office.  There is no way to submit final grades from within Brightspace.

For assessments that are created using a D2L Brightspace tool, such as a quiz or discussion forum, you can create a grade item within the tool so that grades will automatically be added to the gradebook. For assessments that are graded outside of Brightspace, you need to create a grade item, then manually enter student grades into the gradebook. Examples of assessments where you may need to manually enter grades include participation grades, offline midterms, and student presentation grades.
There are two ways you can manually enter grades in Brightspace:

  • Spreadsheet view – Enter grades for all students and all grade items in a single spreadsheet view.
  • Standard view (by grade item) – Enter grades for a single grade item for an individual student, or all students in the course.
