Graduate students (MASc / PhD) are invited to submit an abstract for the student poster session. The main themes are:

  • Indoor Environmental Quality and Health
  • Building Retrofit Strategies and Performance Gaps
  • AI, Data Analytics, and Surrogate Modelling in Building Science
  • Net-Zero Energy/Carbon Buildings and Codes
  • Human-Building Interaction and Usability

This is a great opportunity to share your research, connect with peers, and engage with industry and government guests. Even if you’re not presenting, we encourage you to attend and check out the exciting work being done at the BPRC and our partner institutions!

BPRC students take 1st prize in international competition /bprc/2019/bprc-students-take-1st-prize-in-international-competition/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=bprc-students-take-1st-prize-in-international-competition Tue, 10 Sep 2019 19:23:47 +0000 /bprc/?p=658 BPRC students Luminita Dumitrascu, Tareq Abuimara, Michael Gutland, Larissa Ide and Adrian Soble recently won first place in the Student Modelling Competition, organized as part of the 16th Conference of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA),  2-4 September 2019 in Rome, Italy. They beat out 11 other international teams to win this prestigious honour.

A huge congratulations to our students!

Below is a brief description of the project:

The focus of the competition was to identify the best energy retrofit measures for an historic building, aiming to improve its energy performance while respecting the heritage values of the building and improving occupant comfort. The main tasks performed to achieve the goal of the project were as follow: Modelling and simulation of the existing building; Building energy consumption and indoor environmental quality assessment; Buildings performance enhancement using various retrofit measures; Building daylighting performance and visual comfort assessment; Building performance optimization and retrofit measures prioritization.

Each of the three finalist teams (out of 12 submissions) gave a presentation at the conference in Rome to determine the winner of the competition. Part of the assessment was the final presentation and response to queries from the competition committee and the audience. A poster was also displayed at the Building Simulation 2019 conference.  The team from ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ was announced the winner at the closing ceremony of the conference.

Rebecca Pinto awarded renewal of RDH Research Scholarship /bprc/2019/rebecca-pinto-awarded-renewal-of-rdh-research-scholarship/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rebecca-pinto-awarded-renewal-of-rdh-research-scholarship Wed, 31 Jul 2019 20:53:59 +0000 /bprc/?p=652 Congratulations to Rebecca Pinto, a PhD student in Prof. Beausoleil-Morrison’s SBES lab, who was awarded a renewal of the RDH Research Scholarship yesterday.

Rebecca was one of the three successful winners of a scholarship from RDH Building Science Inc in 2018. The scholarship competition was held across the USA and Canada and was open to students completing their master’s or doctoral degrees in building science research.

Catherine McKenna, was at ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ to announce $3.5M in federal funding for BPRC projects through NRCan.

Dr. Cynthia Cruickshank – CU-CABER – Advanced Building Envelope Technologies for Net-Zero Construction and Retrofit in Canada’s Residential and Commercial Sectors:

This project will construct new large-scale building envelope research equipment, and use that infrastructure to conceive, prototype, evaluate and optimize technical innovations that cut heat loss in housing and buildings by 65% or more, and reduce costs. NRCan contributed $3 million to the project (Energy Innovation Program).

Dr. Burak Gunay (with Dr. Liam O’Brien and Dr. Scott Bucking) — Next Generation Actionable Building Energy Performance Metrics, Data Analytics, and Visualization: An Open-Source Platform:

This project will develop a prototype software tool that leverages existing data sources in buildings in innovative ways to provide actionable information to facility and energy managers on how to significantly reduce energy consumption. NRCan contributed $510 K to the project (Green Infrastructure Program).

Involved in this project are two ÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ students: Joshua Russell and Keelia LaFreniere; along with Prof. Jean Duquette.

Prof. O’Brien will co-lead International Energy Agency Annex 79 on Occupant-Centric Building Design and Operation /bprc/2018/prof-obrien-will-co-lead-international-energy-agency-annex-on-occupant-centric-building-design-and-controls/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=prof-obrien-will-co-lead-international-energy-agency-annex-on-occupant-centric-building-design-and-controls Thu, 18 Jan 2018 16:18:15 +0000 /bprc/?p=565 A new IEA EBC Annex on occupant-centric design and opreation has been approved, as of June 2018. The Annex will involve about 100 experts from 20 countries for five years and focus on fundamental research issues regarding occupant comfort and behaviour, application to design and operations practice, new technology and tool development, and case studies. The project will be led by BPRC’s Liam O’Brien and Prof. Andreas Wagner of Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (Germany). BPRC’s Prof. Burak Gunay will also participate as a subtask co-leader.
