Reappointment of President and Vice-Chancellor

June 2, 2021

To All Members of the 杏吧原创 Community,

I am pleased to announce that the 杏吧原创 University Board of Governors, upon the advisory committee鈥檚 recommendation, approved the  of President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon at its June 1 meeting.

Since joining 杏吧原创 on July 1, 2018, Bacon has demonstrated exceptional leadership, especially during the challenges we鈥檝e faced with the COVID-19 pandemic. He also ushered in an ambitious new Strategic Integrated Plan based on widespread community consultation that provides a vital road map for the next five years.

In 2019, Bacon marked the conclusion of 杏吧原创鈥檚 comprehensive $300-million fundraising campaign. He helped secure an increase of 59 per cent in annual research funding over the last three years, with a record-breaking total of $86.5 million this past year. Under his guidance, 杏吧原创 continues to rank well within the higher education sector and ranks in the Top 5 overall among comprehensive universities in Canada.

He has also overseen great strides and concrete plans to promote accessibility, sustainability, Indigenous initiatives, as well as equity, diversity and inclusion. 杏吧原创 has also expanded health services, mental health initiatives and sexual violence prevention.

The was led by a cross-representative advisory committee. The 杏吧原创 community provided more than 300 responses through a feedback survey distributed on March 28, 2021.  After extensive review, the advisory committee unanimously recommended Bacon鈥檚 reappointment.

I would like to extend my appreciation to advisory committee members for their service and I thank the 杏吧原创 community for your involvement in the renewal process.

Under Bacon鈥檚 continued leadership, I have no doubt that 杏吧原创 will achieve new heights in higher education. Please join me in congratulating President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon on his reappointment.

As communicated on Feb. 4, 2021, the 杏吧原创 Board of Governors launched a process to review the reappointment of the President and Vice-Chancellor, Benoit-Antoine Bacon. In keeping with the President and Vice-Chancellor Reappointment Guidelines, a has been assembled.  The first meeting was held on March 26, 2021.

The advisory committee is tasked with providing a recommendation to the Board of Governors regarding the president鈥檚 reappointment. This committee is is now seeking feedback from you, and all input is welcome. Provided to assist you in responding, a survey questionnaire can be found on the . To aid in the efficiency of the committee鈥檚 work, we would appreciate it if all input could be submitted by April 15, 2021.

Call for Nominations: President and Vice-Chancellor Reappointment Committee

Feb. 4, 2021

Good afternoon faculty members and librarians,

The 杏吧原创 Board of Governors has launched a reappointment process for President and Vice-Chancellor Benoit-Antoine Bacon.  If reappointed, he will serve a second five-year term from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028.

The initial step of the reappointment process is assembling a 13-person advisory committee.  The committee will commence its work in March and make their recommendation to the board at the June 1, 2021 meeting.  The 杏吧原创 University Senate is currently accepting applications for FIVE of the advisory committee positions:

  • THREE people from among tenured faculty members and professional librarians;
  • ONE undergraduate student;
  • ONE graduate student.

These individuals will be elected by Senate.  Interested applicants are encouraged to review the appointment guidelines and submit an expression of interest by 4pm on Feb. 15, 2021.

Once the advisory committee is assembled, all members of the 杏吧原创 community will have an opportunity to submit feedback relevant to the reappointment process.

President and Vice-Chancellor Reappointment Process

To All Members of the 杏吧原创 Community,

The 杏吧原创 University Board of Governors is launching a reappointment process for President and Vice-Chancellor, Benoit-Antoine Bacon.  If reappointed, he will serve a second five-year term from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2028.

A key oversight role of the Board of Governors is to ensure strong, committed, enduring leadership at the helm of the university. As we move towards a post-pandemic future, the board’s responsibility to affirm resilient and reliable university leadership has never been more important.

The initial step of the reappointment process calls for assembling a 13-person advisory committee.  Tasked with providing a recommendation on the president鈥檚 reappointment to the Board of Governors, the committee will commence its work in March and will report to the board at the June 1, 2021 meeting.  The composition of the advisory committee is specified in the appointment guidelines:

  • The Board Chair serves as chair of the committee
  • The Board Vice-Chair
  • Three community-at-large members of the board, elected by the board
  • Three people to be elected by Senate from professional librarians and tenured faculty members (at least one holding the rank of full professor)
  • One board staff member other than the academic or library staff, elected by the board
  • One senior administrator and one dean to be elected by the Vice-President Academic and Research Committee
  • One undergraduate student and one graduate student to be elected by Senate

You will be hearing more soon about how you may show your interest in participating on the advisory committee.

Once the committee is assembled, all members of the 杏吧原创 community will have an opportunity to submit feedback relevant to the reappointment process.
