  {"id":8509,"date":"2019-12-12T10:43:33","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T15:43:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/?post_type=cu_people&#038;p=8509"},"modified":"2026-02-23T15:52:04","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T20:52:04","slug":"chantal-vis","status":"publish","type":"cu_people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/biology\/people\/chantal-vis\/","title":{"rendered":"Chantal Vis"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"mb-6 cu-pageheader cu-component-updated md:mb-12\">\n    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 pb-5 after:w-10 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px\">\n                    \n             \n                \n            <\/h1>\n\n    \n    <\/header>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"current-research\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I am currently a marine\/aquatic ecosystem specialist, in the Marine Conservation Division of the Protected Areas Establishment and Conservation Directorate, Parks Canada where I provide science advice on the management, research and restoration of aquatic and marine ecosystems within protected heritage areas across Canada (national marine conservation areas, national parks and national historic sites).&nbsp; My main research interests involve understanding the responses of aquatic primary producers to natural or anthropogenic drivers.&nbsp; The majority of my work has focused on the biogeochemistry of large river systems, where I have studied the effects of hydrological variations on carbon dynamics.&nbsp; I have also worked on the effects of nutrient enrichment related to agriculture on aquatic plant communities and dissolved oxygen dynamics in streams within agricultural watersheds, including issues related to the proliferation of filamentous algae and cyanobacteria in rivers.&nbsp; More recently, my research has focused on developing models on aquatic plant dynamics to guide restoration decisions within Great Lakes coastal wetlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"selected-publications\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selected Publications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vis C<\/strong>, A Cattaneo &amp; C Hudon.&nbsp; 2008.
