Last weekend, students from teamed up with the Conservation Collective to transform the windows of Nesbitt Building into a vibrant and life-saving work of art. The group painted a stunning bird-friendly mural designed to prevent bird-window collisions – a known hazard for migratory species navigating urban environments.

The initiative was led by MSc student Stasha Lysyk, who studies bird-window collisions as part of her graduate research in Dr. Buxton’s lab. Her work has documented several fatal bird strikes at the Nesbitt Biology building, inspiring this community-based solution to make a meaningful difference.

The mural follows bird-safe design principles that reduce window reflectivity and visual confusion for birds, helping them avoid deadly impacts.

’s amazing to see art and science come together for DzԲپDz.”

Nick Westcott, our Biology Grad is the first researcher to assess the effect of resistance priming on female athletes. The implications of his data are important to strength and conditioning coaches who might seek to apply these practices with their professional female athletes.

What was so exciting about Nick’s project on the effects of game-day resistance priming was that it was directly related to his work as the strength and conditioning coach for the CU varsity athletes,” says Department of Biology Associate Professor Jeff Dawson, one of Westcott’s co-supervisors.

Published on May 13, 2025

As space exploration efforts accelerate and the global space race reaches new heights, NASA is grappling with providing astronauts with nutritious, easy-to-grow food in an environment devoid of gravity. Department of Biology’s student research team (Team Insecta) is exploring the suitability of crickets as a food source in space.

The team members are guided by our Biology professors Heath MacMillan and Sue Bertram, and have been mentored by Matt Muzzatti, a PhD graduate post-doctoral fellow who is optimizing the diet of farmed crickets to enhance their nutritional value.

What happens to crickets in space?

Our Biology Grads & Undergrads: Emily McColville, Sophie Kasdorf, Hunter Brzezinski & Cassandra Stabile working with Sue Bertram & Heath MacMillan were featured on CBC radio for their outstanding research on crickets.

Their team is sending crickets at different life stages on Canada’s Falcon 20 aircraft, which will fly in parabolas to simulate microgravity. They’ll be held in a secure case that’s regulated for temperature. The team is looking at “several different factors” from the flight, notably whether the crickets survive and if their age affects their likelihood of making it back alive.

According to Sophie Kasdorf, a mission specialist with Team Insecta, crickets could be suitable for space travel because they can be raised in a small space with limited resources. Read more
