Having already played host to Canada’s first on-road test of an autonomous vehicle connected to live city infrastructure in 2017, Ottawa now looks poised to solidify its reputation as the country’s hub for connected and autonomous vehicle (CAV) technologies in announcing that its private L5 Nepean test track – the first integrated CAV testing environment of its kind in North America – would open its doors in early 2019.

There are more than 7.5 million kilometres of roads in North America and their conditions are constantly changing. Construction, potholes, accident scenes, new road signs and altered road geometry each present a challenge for today’s autonomous vehicle technologies, which use a combination of on-board sensors and cameras to interpret their environment.

The announcement was made today in Kanata by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and focused on the next generation of connected and autonomous vehicles.

Ottawa’s private autonomous vehicle test track, the first of its kind in North America, is almost open for business.

The Ottawa L5 test facilities, housed on the 1,866-acre National Capital Commission Greenbelt Research Farm in Nepean, boast a 16-kilometre stretch of private roadway that’s almost done being fitted with the latest communications technology for a fully integrated test environment.

The City of Ottawa has announced a new plan to test driverless car technology by setting up a test track dubbed Ottawa L5 with roughly 16 paved kilometres. The track is located in a 1,866-acre property in Nepean and will be the first of its kind in North America to test driverless cars in this manner.

If you’ve ever sat idling impatiently as an apparently endless stream of boxcars rolling past a level crossing, you won’t be surprised to learn that freight trains can reach nearly four kilometres in length and carry thousands of tonnes of cargo.

But there’s economy in that scale: rail is an ultra-efficient way to ship goods over land. A single litre of fuel can move a ton of goods nearly 200 kilometre – about four times the fuel efficiency of highway shipping.
