Abstract:

Reclaimed聽Asphalt Pavements (RAP) and Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) are increasingly used in asphalt concrete聽(AC) pavements聽due to聽their lower聽initial cost and potential sustainability benefits. Despite these benefits, the use of these materials poses significant challenge聽as the recycled聽binder available in these materials聽is聽highly oxidized due to聽aging. This makes asphalt binder brittle聽and becomes a driving factor for cracking related distresses. In order to improve the performance of聽AC mixtures聽with聽RAP and RAS recycled聽materials, rejuvenators are used to聽modify the oxidized binder rheology聽and chemistry. Rejuvenators can be used in virgin binders to reduce the impact of increased stiffness or can be mixed directly with RAP/RAS stockpiles.
