What happens if you suddenly become disabled and unable to work and earn a living?

That’s what recently happened to 19-year-old ‘Jess’ after he was seriously injured in a cycling accident. With a concussion and broken collar bone, Jess, who was formerly healthy and fit, was suddenly forced to do something he never expected to have to.

I asked him to share what went into his decision about applying for social assistance, and whether it changed what he had previously thought about other people who are also on welfare.

Podcast: Social media, politics and the ‘freedom to hate’

ALiGN Media Lab founder and director Merlyna Lim was interviewed by Dr. Jemma Purdey from Talking Indonesia in a podcast on . Please click the link below to listen.

Excerpt from :

The Jakarta gubernatorial election, held earlier this year, was perhaps the most divisive and bitterly fought campaign seen in modern Indonesian politics. Social media and the internet played a large role in the campaign, which was characterised by racism and sectarianism. But how much can we blame the internet for the bitterness of the campaign and how much is it explained by Indonesia’s conservative turn more generally? How did technology impact on this election? Are we seeing a new platform for organisation and political activism in Indonesia, based on a freedom to hate?

In this week’s podcast, Dr Jemma Purdey explores these questions with Associate Professor Merlyna Lim from Ӱԭ University, Ottawa, Canada. Her research and teaching interests revolve around the political and cultural implications of media and technology. Her most recent article is , published in Critical Asian Studies.

In 2017, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by  from Monash University,  from the University of Melbourne’s Asia Institute,  from the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, and  from La Trobe University.

Lim’s inaugural lecture: Roots, Routes, and Routers

Merlyna Lim, Canada Research Chair in Digital Media & Global Network Society, delivers her Public Inaugural Lecture: at Ӱԭ University on November 6th, 2014. Lim makes the point that social media is neither the harbinger of social movements and social change nor just a passive and neutral medium. People and social media are both inseparable in the making of contemporary social movements. Instead of making rushed judgements that attribute the cause of social movements and uprisings with social media, she suggests that we must explore the deeper offline historical contexts that reside in the past. Movements such as the Arab Springs and protests in Hong Kong are not solely created online or offline, but rather through the flows and interconnectivity between both spaces. Social transformations take time, which the immediacy of social media does not always address. See more in a of Merlyna Lim’s lecture, accompanying her presentation.
