Dr. Zahra Nazari: Empowering Afghan Women in STEM (STEAM)

This initiative aims to foster educational empowerment and technological engagement among Afghans, specifically women, both within Afghanistan and in the diaspora by increasing accessibility to educational resources in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), regardless of their geographical location.

• Enhances skill sets necessary for career advancement in STEAM fields;

• Builds community by creating an inclusive and supportive online platform where participants can learn, share experiences, and connect with experts in the STEAM;

• Includes: Digital Gateway (Empowering Afghan Women in STEAM) and a comprehensive online platform named to serve as a central hub for educational content, networking opportunities, and mentorship;

• Aims to empower participants through free, high-quality educational programs and foster a community that celebrates and supports women’s achievements in STEAM;

• Engages a significant number of participants, with 320 applications received and 60 students enrolled across the Data Science Essentials course;

• Ensures participants not only learn critical tech skills but also gain exposure to global challenges, such as the Women in Data Science Worldwide Datathon.

This project is a journalistic endeavor aimed at enhancing women’s conditions in politics and society by drawing insights from interviews conducted with women regarding women’s political participation and the future political landscape of Afghanistan. The insights gained from interviews emphasized the importance of their involvement in political processes, documenting historical moments in Afghan contemporary history on women’s political roles and participation, changes in political scenarios and changing roles of women (especially since 2001).

• Ten interviews of Afghan women leaders and civil society activists in women’s political participation were ;

• Documents the role of media development in the global democratization process.

• Documents how women recollect the portrayal of Afghan women, alongside other women in Afghan media, the visibility of Afghan women in the media etc.;

• Documents the insight into the history of women’s organizational efforts to be political; roles of civil society and Western NGOs, funding politics etc.

Adela Kabiri: Risk Management Training in Dangerous Environments for Afghan Journalists

This training is designed in response to the situation of journalism and news reporting in Afghanistan after the takeover of the Taliban with an aim to build the capacity of journalists who now encounter extreme danger in carrying out their work.

Razia Etemadi: Words of Care for Women and Children’s Health in Hazaragi Dialect

The Words of Care project facilitated the development of a user friendly, dynamic, digital platform that translates medical terminology from the Hazaragi dialect to English. It is an open access tool for the Hazara community, interpreters, medical staff, and other individuals. Users can contribute by adding missing words, enhancing the platform’s inclusivity and accuracy.

Mohammad Jawad Zawulistani and Mohammad Aref Mohammadi: New Home, Old Memories

This project aimed to collect and publish personal stories and narratives of displaced Afghan activists who have arrived in Canada after the Taliban takeover of the country on August 15, 2021. The project provides the newcomers with a platform to share their own narratives and stories while helping the readers to better understand the context in which these stories have been lived and shaped people’s lives. Additionally, the project also helps preserve oral histories through documenting refugees’ stories and preventing the loss of valuable cultural and historical knowledge.

• Activists interviewed 15 Afghan civil society activists who have settled in different cities and provinces in Canada, documenting their stories of displacement, activism in exile and contribution to Afghanistan;

• Future dissemination plan includes exhibitions, library tours, advocacy platforms, museums etc.

Judges Freshta Masomi, Zamila Sangar, and Wahida Rahimi: Comparative Study on Domestic Violence Law in Canada and Afghanistan

This project is a study conducted by former Judges Freshta Masomi, Zamila Sangar, and Wahida Rahimi. The study looks at domestic violence in Afghanistan, both prior to the Taliban’s return to power in 2021 and presently. These laws are compared to the laws relating to domestic violence in Canada. The two systems of laws are compared in order to highlight similarities and differences in the respective legal systems.

• In addition to highlighting similarities and differences between the laws of Canada and Afghanistan, the project helps to preserve the knowledge systems left behind by Judges Freshta Masomi, Zamila Sangar, and Wahida Rahimi in Afghanistan.

Razia Sayad: Child Rights Advocacy Toolkit

The child rights advocacy toolkit is designed to cater to a diverse audience, encompassing both Afghan and non-Afghan advocates who are committed to the well-being of children in Afghanistan. This includes child rights experts, students, child rights activists and advocates inside the country and those in diaspora.

• It offers resources to continue their advocacy efforts and address the specific needs of Afghan children, even from afar.

• The toolkit is translated into Dari and Pashto in order to be accessible to local Afghan communities. The language used in the toolkit is deemed to be culturally appropriate and easily understandable. For non-Afghan audiences, it is available in English. Its simplicity and ease of use make it a valuable resource for those seeking to enhance their knowledge and engagement in the field of child rights.
